Richard “Dick” Nussbaum, 92

Richard “Dick” Nussbaum, 92, of Brandon, formerly of Garretson, passed away on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church.

Richard was born on Jan. 27, 1934, to Richard and Leona (Kearney) Nussbaum in Garretson. He attended grades 1-8 in a country school and graduated from Garretson High School in 1952. He was a member of the Slip-Up 4-H Club and was chief of the Sioux Empire Fair in 1953. He married Marjorie Lee at Brandon Lutheran Church on Sept. 25, 1954.

Richard was employed at Sioux Falls Construction Company building dormitories at Augustana College. He wheeled countless wheelbarrow loads of cement. After two years he joined the U.S. Army and went to Fort Chafee in Arkansas for basic training. He served at Travis Air Force base in Fairfield, Calif., until his discharge in July 1958.

After his discharge from the Army, he started farming and milking cows, which he continued until his retirement. Richard and Marjorie then spent 18 winters in Mesa, Ariz., where they enjoyed the warm weather and great friends. In 2015, they moved into Brandon.

Richard is survived by his wife, Marjorie; children, Brad (Monica) Nussbaum and Nancy (Bill) Hansen; two granddaughters, Brittany (Kyle) Lessman and Stephanie (Brett) Tighe; five great-grandchildren, Beau Lessman, Carter Tighe, Bria Lessman, Jacquelynn Tighe, and Keegan Tighe; sister, Judy Vandersnick; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Dorothy, sister Marlene Erickson, sister-in-law, Dorothy Robins, and brothers-in-law, Phil Robins, Roger Erickson, and Fred Vandersnick.
