Letter to the Editor - Kippley: Sioux Falls wins with Transcontinental Railroad

Cities such as Sioux Falls run on the hard work of everyday men and women, small business owners, farmers, and many more. Simply put, local communities thrive when the economy thrives. That is why the proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern is vital for our economy. It is a practical, common-sense investment that would strengthen our region and country. 

For decades, from my work in the SD Governor’s Office of Economic Development to collaborating on business development with the Buffalo Ridge Rail Authority, I have worked alongside neighbors to advance smart and responsible growth. What I have learned is simple: we need to support initiatives that support businesses and prepare us for the future. This merger does just that. 

Having a strong, efficient rail network isn’t a partisan issue; it’s an American issue. By shifting freight to a single-line service, shippers can expect to save roughly $3.5 billion each year. The savings will trickle down to families and small businesses across our country, and here locally, at a time when many Americans are feeling the burden of rising costs. 

Just as importantly, this merger would ease the wear and tear on our roads. The companies project it will shift 2.1 million trucks off our roads nationwide. Together, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern would create a seamless transcontinental railroad, connecting Sioux Falls shippers on both coasts and reinforcing the Midwest’s role as a critical hub for the American economy. 

Residents across America, whether engineers, farmers, business owners, or local leaders, feel the impact of decisions like this one. This merger will benefit Sioux Falls and communities across America, making it worthy of support. When our industries succeed, families and communities do too.
