From the Pulpit: Spiritual leaders at home

“These words … teach them diligently to your children.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

I share these words at the beginning of every confirmation year. 

Our pastors, teachers, Directors of Christian Education (DCE), and Deaconesses did not enter church work to replace you: as spiritual providers for your family, as heads of your household, or as the primary means to access God’s promise, forgiveness, and grace through His Word. If a pastor must be involved in sharing God’s Word or expressing forgiveness of sins…If a DCE is the only one who can teach Bible stories to children…then we have ignored God’s directive stated above—a directive geared toward families, not church leaders.

Faith conversation and instruction is intended to occur primarily in the home. You don’t have to be an expert to do it. You just have to do it! This is also where we, as congregations, have failed. While church workers are spiritual leaders for a local congregation, their role as pastor or teacher is “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12). 

Parents can read a Bible story with their children. A single individual at home can open a Bible or devotional to spend the morning or evening in God’s Word. A group of friends can connect to talk about a biblical topic or hold a small group Bible Study. Can’t meet at church, or with the Pastor and DCE? So what! You can still dive into, learn from, and share God’s Word. Not only “can” you, but you should. 

I am not advocating eliminating churches. I am not saying pastors are not necessary. God’s Word also establishes the office (and duties) they fill. They are good! What I am addressing is the mentality they are the only ones who can handle the Word of God.

For our neglect to be intentional with our role as spiritual leaders in the home, for our neglect (as Pastor and DCE) to equip you for this service and opportunity, Jesus died on that cross. Jesus forgives our neglect and worry. He calms our troubled hearts. Live in that grace, His grace. Teach and learn in that grace, yes, even at home.
