The Absent Uncle: Getting modern
Last year I remember writing about our household music collection that resides in our living room on a six-shelf bookcase.
Well, now that six shelf bookcase houses a museum.
For my wife’s birthday, our son shared his family subscription to one of the online music providers and programmed our TV’s to be able to stream the service and use the attached sound systems throughout the house.
While I was appreciative of the gesture – sort of a give back for my sharing of another subscription we have shared with him – I really didn’t think I would use it that much. After all, we had our music collection, a fairly good turntable and CD player hooked up to the sound system and it worked pretty well for us.
So, a week after he installed the program, I was working in the kitchen prepping food for the next few days and thought about giving it a try while I worked.
I stumbled through the menu to select an artist to listen to – found already established playlists for that artist so hit the play button and away we go. Easy after figuring out the system.
The playlist I selected did feature the artist I wanted plus other similar music from several different group/persons – some I didn’t recognize (but liked) and others that were familiar that I also liked. Overall, the songs played were all enjoyable and introduced me to other artists that in some cases I thought I didn’t enjoy.
It was quite a revelation.
Sometimes when I’ve bought an album or CD you find some songs on it that you really don’t enjoy or appreciate but have to tolerate when the entire record is played. That song sometimes becomes a bit more acceptable with playing over the years, but still it seems to just be a time filler – I didn’t pay to listen to this song (oh, wait a minute, yes, I did!) it just came with the album and unless you are going to hit some button to skip it, you have to listen to it.
Since my initial foray into this new modern way to listen to music I have used it just about every day. Venturing out into different genres, listening to artists I liked, but was too cheap to invest in buying an album or CD. I like it!
If I sound like a really old guy and should have known about this stuff years ago – guilty as charged. Getting modern.
