Presenting the Colors: Valley Springs Elementary
Inspired by the “Have You Ever Wondered” segment that airs on a local news station, Valley Springs Legion Auxiliary asked why the American flag is flown at public buildings. In Valley Springs alone, people can see the flag displayed at the school, municipal building, and the post office. So, why are those flags flown? The short answer is that it’s the law. According to Section 2 of the Federal Flag code, the flag should be displayed daily on or near the main administration building of every public institution and should be displayed every school day in or near every schoolhouse. Some people may remember Miss Frances Scott choosing two students to put the flag up each day. She would watch them from her classroom window to ensure that the flag was properly raised and lowered.Today, that task falls to the school custodial staff. Submitted photo.
