Commercial permits up for city in '17

Commercial building permits in Brandon were up in 2017, while the city saw a slight decrease in residential permits compared to the previous year.
The city issued 49 commercial building permits in 2017 for a total valuation of $8,707,690, compared to 37 commercial permits at $5,146,493 in 2016.
Commercial building saw an increase of nearly $4 million in 2017, which city building inspector Paul Clark attributes to several new warehouses in the industrial parks, the addition of the Brandon Retail Center on Splitrock Blvd., and additions to the middle school and Brandon Valley Assembly of God.
On the home front, residential building dropped from 55 permits in 2016 to 44 permits in 2017.
Of the 44 permits last year, 40 went to single-family homes and four to multi-family dwellings, for a total valuation of $8,211,788.
In 2016, the city issued 48 single-family permits and seven multi-family permits totaling $13,266,279.
“Single-family is kind of flowing along,” Clark said. “With Costello coming in (in 2016) and building 30-units, that certainly makes a difference, and that only happens on occasion.”
Overall numbers remain consistent, however.
In 2017 the city issued a total of 438 building permits valued at $19,604,078, compared to 433 permits in 2016 at $20,971,986.
Of the 438 permits last year, three went to razed structures and 59 to additions or remodels.
A look at 2015 building permits indicate requests are on the rise. That year Brandon issued a total of 396 permits, including 44 commercial and 47 residential – for a total valuation of $19,602,689.
Clark said there’s a lot of potential for building permits in 2018.
“There’s been some interest in the Brandon Retail Center on N. Splitrock with beautique and Gypsy Trading Co. That’s a heavily traveled corridor,” Clark said. “A bunch of townhomes are going up in east Brandon, and Aspen Harbor is coming along with all those lots available. Potentially that would be a pretty big neighborhood unfolding.”
