Lady Lynx open with win, loss

The Lady Lynx opened up their 2017 season Aug. 22 against a familiar foe, the Washington Warriors, and came away with a 3-1 Metro Conference road victory. While the Warriors took the first game, 21-25, the Lynx reeled off the next three, 25-23, 25-19, 25-13. On Thursday, BV evened their season mark at 1-1, as the visiting Mitchell Kernels popped off a 3-0 victory.

The Kernels proved to be a well-rehearsed team, as their fast-paced offense caught the Lady Lynx off-guard, resulting in the 3-0 loss.

“Mitchell runs a little bit faster offense than what we saw against Washington, and so I think that was an adjustment for us, adjusting our timing for our setters, but also defending them with the block and things like that,” said Lynx head coach Dacia Boehrns.

Serving and hitting errors plagued Brandon Valley in the first two games, while the team showed much improved play in game three. The Lynx posted an 8-6 advantage, which would be their biggest lead, before the Kernels took charge.

Boehrns said Thursday’s loss exposed areas the team needs to focus on more.

“We identified some areas that we need to work on and focus on. You only have so much time in practice and you feel like you want to hit all the areas, but when you get into your season you kind of need to zero in on certain areas that you know are weaknesses,” she said. 

​In this match, Avery Myers and Macyn Flanigan were the serving leaders with 12 and 10, respectively. On the receiving side of the serve, Emma Simonson had 23 serve receives to her credit. She also handled 19 digs; Timmons had 11. Timmons led the net attack with 25 kills, and Flanigan fired 17 at the Kernels. Timmons also had two blocks.

BV 3, SFW 1

Brandon Valley got their 2017 season off to a winning start, posting a 3-1 road win over the Washington Warriors. With limited practices in the books, Boehrns said she told the girls to just play the game and have fun.

“Practices are kind of limited at this point, eight or nine, so I just told the girls to go show what you’ve been working on for the last nine days, show them what you’ve got, go out there, have some fun and play together as a team, and it just worked. They just gelled out there,” she said.

Timmons and Flanigan were firing on all cylinders in their net play. Timmons recorded 28 kills and six blocks, while Flanigan had 13 kills and six blocks to her credit. Myers put up 47 set assists.

The back-row effort was led by Simonson’s 38 serve receives and 21 digs. Timmons and Reinschmit each had 10 digs in the win. Reinschmidt was also credited with 28 serves, and Emily Erck had 15.

The Lady Lynx host Huron at 7 p.m. Thursday and travel to Watertown on Saturday.
