Verna Mae Bendt, 91

Verna Mae Bendt, 91, of Brandon, SD died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2022 at George Boom Funeral Chapel, Brandon. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022 at George Boom Funeral Chapel, Brandon.

Verna was born on June 20, 1931 in Deuel County, S.D., the daughter of Peter and Clara (Westley) Furness. She grew up and attended school in Deuel County. Verna was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt, S.D. 

Verna moved to Sioux Falls in 1948 and married Harvey Bendt on Nov. 10, 1950, and they made their home in Sioux Falls. In 1968, they moved to rural Valley Springs. She worked at Fantles Tea Room and Morrells in Sioux Falls. 

Verna was a member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, where she volunteered in the church office for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 131, Valley Springs. Verna enjoyed traveling, reading and making afghans, doilies and quilt tops for the church. 

Verna is survived by her son, Paul Bendt; daughter, Pam (Garmen) Casperson; daughter-in-law, Ione Stein; three grandchildren, Debbie (Dejuan) Tayler, Tim (Becca) Bendt and Karlee (Scott) Boulton; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Eleanora Collins; brothers-in-law, Harold Sager, DeWayne Madoll and Larry (Joyce) Bendt; sister-in-law, Sandy Bendt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey (2004); son, David Bendt; four brothers, Albert, Palmer, Kenny and Orley Furness; six sisters, Myrtle Wegen, Pearl Donaldson, Adeline Furness, Clarice Sager, Norma Sheffield and Cleon Madoll.
