Troop 212 ‘roots’ themselves in community service

Arbor Day was started on April 10, 1872, by I. Sterlin Morton of Nebraska. On that day, it is estimated that over 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska alone. Arbor Day is now celebrated worldwide, usually on the last Friday in April. Brandon has been celebrating Arbor Day since 2008 as part of the Tree City USA membership. To become a member of Tree City USA, communities must have a tree ordinance, tree board, show a $2 per-person spending toward tree-related endeavors, and have an Arbor Day celebration once a year. This is the 19th Arbor Day celebration for Brandon as a member of Tree City USA. This year, Brandon Troop 212 assisted in planting six trees in various parks throughout the city.
