Dr. Jarod Larson, BVSD superintendent
The South Dakota Department of Education will be releasing the state’s schools’ public accountability data on Sept. 19.
Overall, the schools within the Brandon Valley School District have performed extremely well. We should be very proud of our students and staff for their exceptional work. Very proud, not satisfied. In our pursuit of excellence, we must constantly work to improve and grow. Evaluating, reviewing, and utilizing data is a critical component of continual school improvement.
The state’s accountability model, known as the School Performance Index, is an accountability system that applies multiple indicators to inform the public of school performance and progress.
The indicators utilized for public high schools in South Dakota are Student Achievement, High School Completion and College and Career Readiness.
The indicators utilized for elementary, intermediate, and middle schools are Student Achievement, Attendance and Academic Growth.
A detailed overview of the Brandon Valley School District’s school accountability data will be provided in the State of the Schools Address at the BVSD’s Sept. 25 Board of Education meeting. The presentation will also be on the BVSD website following the meeting.
Attendance is not only a component of school accountability, but also a key factor in a child’s academic career and life in general. In addition to a tremendously positive impact on academic performance and outcomes, making regular school attendance a priority develops healthy life habits. We can prepare our children for a lifetime of success by making school attendance a priority.
I would like to remind everyone there will be no school Oct. 6 for staff inservice. Parent-teacher conferences will be Oct. 16 for intermediate and middle school and Oct. 17 for elementary and high school. Please note, these will be regular school days.
For additional information on important dates, view the 2017-18 Academic Calendar on any of our respective school websites.
