From BVSD retirees to the BCF...Retired staff from the Brandon Valley School District generously donated $100 to the Brandon Community Foundation. Bill Miller (right), representing the BVSD retirees, presents Bob Logan, a BCF board member, with a crisp $100 bill. Miller explained that the school district foots the bill for the annual luncheon, which was held last week at Brandon Lutheran Church. Additional expenses (postage for invites, tip, etc.) are covered by donations taken at the luncheon. Barber wins BVIS spelling title with ‘P-O-D-I-U-M’Ellie Barber was declared the winner of the fourth annual Brandon Valley Intermediate School Spelling Bee held Friday, Dec. 14. During November, students in grades 5-6 participated in classroom spelling bees. The top 20 spellers from grades 5-6 advanced to the oral spelling bee. After many exciting rounds, Barber correctly spelled “podium” to win the BVIS title. Second-place went to Carter Hoxsie and third place was awarded to Brayden Heronimus. These three students will represent BVIS at the regional spelling bee in Sioux Falls in February. The event was sponsored by the BVIS PTA. Submitted photo*/
Brandon Valley FFA reaps rewards at State LDEThe Brandon Valley FFA Chapter had 11 members compete in the South Dakota State Leadership Development (LDE) Contest in Pierre Dec. 2-3. The BV chapter members worked very hard to prepare for the State LDE. These members are (in no particular order) Liz Kluin, who placed 12th in Prepared Speech, and Hunter Wright, who claimed 13th in Creed Speaking. The Ag Issues Team, which includes Kayla Jacobson, Brooke Shriver, and Kennedy Safar, captured seventh place. The Ag Sales team of Tucker Trout, Grace Wright, Isaac Timmerman competed, as did Henry Wright and Melissa Jacobson in the Ag Broadcasting Contest. Paige Finn traveled with the team as alternate and assisted with the contest. The FFA members particularly enjoyed visiting the state capital and viewing the Christmas tree displays. Jim and Diane Johnson of Brandon recently ventured to Minnesota to see the Northern Lights, but clouds, unfortunately blocked their view. Not all was lost, as the Johnsons had fun hiking and enjoying winter indoor games with friends. They are pictured outside the Gunflint Lodge, about an hour west of Grand Marais.
