From the Pulpit: The government won’t save you, Jesus will

Promises, promises. There are a lot of promises that candidates make as they are competing for public office. Perhaps some of these promises are made with the best of intentions, perhaps other promises are made because they know it is what people want to hear. Either way, the picture of a better future has been laid before the people every election year.

Most of the time that future looks great, a whole lot better than how things look right now. We want those promises to be true… so badly. We want people to follow through on their word. We want the future to be better. Whether we’d say it out loud or not, we want to be saved from the brokenness, the disappointment, and the sin that we see around us.

If you’ve gone through a few election cycles, you know that some promises are kept, others are kind of kept, others aren’t able to be kept, and still others are completely ignored. No politician, as hard as they may try, comes through 100 percent of the time.

But Jesus does. He comes through on all of his promises. Did you know that there are hundreds of promises in the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled? From being born of a virgin in the line of King David to being born in Bethlehem – every prophecy was fulfilled. It is what convinces those who read the Bible that Jesus is the Messiah and it is what continues to convince us that Jesus will fulfill his promises to us.

He has promised that those who believe in him will have eternal life (John 3:16); he has promised to be with us always (Matthew 28:20); he has promised to forgive our sins (1 John 1:9), and the list goes on and on.

Politicians may do their best, but they aren’t God. They can’t keep the promises that God can keep and they can’t save you from your sins. Only God can – he did and he does.
