From the Pulpit: God is present with us, even when we do not recognize Him

In Gospel of Luke 24:13-35, two discouraged followers of Jesus Christ walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus, trying to process the shocking events of the crucifixion. They had hoped Jesus would redeem Israel, but His death left them confused and disappointed. As they talk along the road, Jesus Himself joins them, yet they do not recognize Him. This moment reveals a powerful truth: God can be present with us even when we do not realize it, especially in seasons of doubt, grief, or confusion.

As they walk, Jesus listens to their concerns before correcting their misunderstanding. Then He begins to explain how the entire Old Testament pointed to the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection. Their problem was not a lack of information – they had heard about the empty tomb and the angels – but a lack of understanding. Through Scripture, Jesus reframes their disappointment and shows them that God’s plan had been unfolding all along. 

When they arrive in Emmaus and sit down to eat, Jesus breaks bread with them, and suddenly their eyes are opened – they finally recognize Him. In that instant He disappears, leaving them amazed. Reflecting on the journey, they say their hearts were “burning” as He explained the Scriptures. Their despair quickly turns into excitement, and they rush back to Jerusalem to tell the others that Jesus is alive.

Let us not be people who rush, but people who see Jesus’ power everywhere and available to all. In all seasons, help us to see YOU above our emotions and circumstances. Your resurrection power has changed everything.
