From the Pulpit: All we need to know about God is in scripture

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

 

All of us at one time or another have questioned in our mind just how God sees and thinks about the world in which we live. We have pondered, postulated, and at times even predicted the thoughts and ways of God. Try as we might, we find we are limited in understanding the thoughts and ways of the Almighty. 

I have a small hobby shop dedicated to tinkering with (and hopefully restoration of) vintage radios and televisions. In my shop is a 1950’s vacuum tube AM radio that still works quite well. One night last fall I was able to tune in a live AM broadcast for a Bengals football game all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio. But as good as that old radio works, it is limited by what it can receive. As well as it receives AM broadcasts, it will never be able to receive FM, VHF, UHF, microwave frequencies. 

We, in our understanding of the thoughts and ways of God, are like that. Even at our best, we receive only a small glimpse into the grace and wonder of our God. Yet, all that we need to know of God is found in the pages of scripture. God has shown to us His love and His plan of redemption for His people through the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. For all that we do not know or understand about God, we have been given the knowledge of his never-ending love for us, and that is truly something to ponder.
