Friendships are one of the greatest gifts we can have in this life, and the Bible is filled with descriptions on this subject. Proverbs 17:17(NLT) A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need. Proverbs 27:6 (NLT) Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.
I have always enjoyed good friends around me, especially those who shoot straight with me. I’ve learned to really value friends who encourage me to draw close to God. It’s true – you become who you associate with. We should be careful and wise in our choice of close friends – however, God also wants us to influence others for His sake.
There is one especially great example of friendship in the Bible – the story of David and Jonathan, King Saul’s oldest son. Their friendship begins after David’s battle with Goliath. Jonathan was so impressed with David’s faith and courage. As the King’s son, Jonathan would be the most likely and natural heir to the throne of Israel, after his father’s death.
Jonathan was a true follower of God. He had proven in battle to be a brave warrior. While Jonathan ‘should have’ been threatened by David – he wasn’t at all. Consider these verses - 1 Samuel 18:1,3 (NLT) … Jonathan became one in spirit with David ... And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan became one in spirit with David, a friend, a kindred soul. He chose David as his closest friend. Jonathan would go on to dramatically demonstrate his sincerity and respect by handing David his royal robe, his tunic, his sword, bow and belt! Jonathan humbled himself, giving up his rightful claim to the throne, trusting God’s choice instead. Of all people, Jonathan would gain the most if Davide wasn’t in the picture. Jonathan essentially gives David all his rights to his throne! A true example of godly humility and faith!
I believe Jonathan to not only be close to David, but also close to God. Looking at Jonathan, you can easily see a strong walk with God. Jonathan was always looking out for David and encouraging him whenever possible. In our friendships, may we strive to walk in faith, trusting in God and being that kind of unselfish friend that Jonathan was.
