Jill's Journal: Somedays, you just gotta laugh at yourself
Some days, I just gotta laugh at myself.
Actually, a lot of days I just gotta laugh at myself.
Monday, as it turns out, was one of those days.
The funny thing is, I didn’t realize I was having “one of those days” until nearing the very end of my work day.
For the most part, I had had a productive day at my desk. Most Mondays and Tuesdays are desk days for me. It’s in those hours that I’m placing stories and photos, headlines and cutlines on each page of the paper you hold in your hands. each week.
As the clock in my office ticked closer to 6:30 p.m., I packed up my laptop and headed to the high school for the school board meeting. I arrived before it got started, found a seat in the front row and settled in for what I assumed would be – and turned out to be – a relativel and largely uneventful brief meeting.
It was toward the end of the school board meeting that I came to the realization that I was having “one of those days.” For the first time that day, I felt the neck of my shirt “riding up” closer and closer to my chin. That seemed a bit odd, as the blouse I chose to wear that day has a large, square neckline. I also took notice that my necklace was hidden under the neckline, which surely wasn’t how I remembered it being when I last wore the blouse last summer.
“Things change,” thought silently to myself, wondering if a few added pounds were responsible for how it fit.
I have no idea why it occurred to me at that very moment to see if, by chance, I had put my shirt on backwards that morning, but, I did.
And, it was.
I smirked to myself.
At the same time, Board member David Bell gave a glance my way. I had to wonder if he thought I was smirking at the discussion the board was having at the time. Thankfully, as I noted earlier, it was less-than-exciting agenda of topics, so the smirk, for the most part, was in no way disrespectful to the discussion that was taking place.
On my short drive home from the school, I giggled at myself, and of course questioned if anyone I came into contact with that day wondered who dressed me that morning.
But no one uttered a word.
On Tuesday when I chose a shirt out of the closet. I chose one that clearly couldn’t be worn backwards without someone taking notice.
Now, for the two different shoes I have on today …
