Jill's Journal: It's gonna take a village, Brandon Valley!

I don’t know about you, but I’m quite sure there’s a whole lot of baseball-loving folks in Brandon and Valley Springs that have been waiting for the big party to finally arrive.

What party, you ask?

Well, it’s the 2021 State American Legion Baseball Tournament, which Brandon will be hosting for the very first time since Brandon Valley Post 131 began competing in the Class A Legion Baseball ranks.

The event kicks off Friday, July 23 and wraps up on Tuesday, July 27. And from what I understand, we’ve got a whole lot of visitors coming our way over those five days of top-tier Legion Baseball action.

This is where we, as a community, need to step up and help out the Brandon Valley Baseball Association. Let’s be honest, folks – the BVBA has already done all of the hard work to bring this tournament to our great community.

For starters, they’ve built a solid and very popular baseball program from the ground up, which has been years in the making. And they continue to plunge forward to give hundreds – yes, multiple hundreds – of kids the opportunity to pick up a bat and put on a glove each year. From the very littlest of players all the way up to our Senior Legion program.

They campaigned for a championship baseball stadium that I know I have – and probably many of you likely have, too – been proud to tell others, “You should see the baseball stadium that we have!”

They pounded the pavement to bring in more than a million dollars to build this high-caliber, all-turf infield facility, that features a roofed grandstand, roomy dugouts, a top-notch concession stand, and well-improved restrooms. All neccessities to host the tournament.

Next, they sold the State Legion Baseball Commission – the decision makers – on our community, pledging that our community will to roll out the red carpet to really make this event shine.

They’re doing their best to keep the promises they made, but they do need some help, and here’s how you can do your part by simply donating a couple of hours of your time.

At last notice, the BVBA was still 100 volunteers shy of making this event a success. They need volunteers for essentially simple jobs, from manning the concession stand to greeting folks and steering them in the right direction in the parking lot to collecting gate fees and the list goes on and on.

The BVBA has made it easy to sign up and help, by creating an online sign-up program. For access to the sign-up, go to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c44aead2ba0ffc07-2021

Give it some serious thought, Brandon Valley. Again, you can volunteer for as few as one shift over those five days or several shifts a day or throughout the tournament.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. That is certainly true.

But it takes a village to pull off hosting a State American Legion Baseball Tournament via Brandon Valley’s first-class style.
