Jill's Journal: Disappointing now, but more than exciting later

By:
Jill Meier, Journal editor

When this whole pandemic created by the mysterious coronavirus has subsided, I can only imagine how the little things in life we so often take for granted will rank right up there with the “big” things in life we plan for and carry out.

Take for instance, going to school or to work, out for a day of shopping with the girls or taking in an afternoon game at the local ballpark, a trip to see grandma and grandpa or a fun day at the zoo.

I can hardly wait.

And I’m sure many of you feel the very same way.

This feeling is sort of like a kid anticipating Christmas morning when you finally get to dive into the colorfully wrapped presents awaiting you under the tree.

I long for that feeling.

And I’m sure many of you do, too.

I look forward to the day when I can walk into my mom’s home and give her a great big hug. It’s already been too many weeks since I’ve been able to do that.

I’m sure many of you want to hug your mom and dad, too.

I look forward to going out in public without fear, all the while wondering, will this be the day that I’m infected?

I’m sure those same thoughts have been swirling through many of your minds, too.

I look forward to the day I can gather with friends around the table to chat about our day, poke fun at whatever topic surfaces, hash out how the local sports teams will fare in their next games, and to simply laugh at all of the comical moments that life presents.

I’m sure many of you look forward to spending those silly times with friends once again, too.

I look forward to a time when toilet paper, flour, hand sanitizer and the like are plentiful on the shelves.

I’m guessing many of you look forward to the day when we no longer have to wonder when and/or if these items will be available.

We’re now living in a time of uncertainty. How long will this “new normal” last? Will our seniors have a graduation ceremony or does that milestone moment simply get swept under the rug as life goes on? When will I be able to worship alongside my friends at church and not from the comforts of my living room? Will our local businesses survive, including this one?

I wonder about all of these things, and more.

And I’m sure many of you do, too.

Every day, we’re disheartened by cancellations, postponements or until further notices. I look forward to when today’s disappointments are tomorrow’s more-exciting-than-ever moments.

I’m sure many of you do, too.

Now more than ever, I look forward to returning to life as we once knew it, to the little things we so often take for granted and to the big things in life yet to come.

And I’m sure many of you do, too.
