Find what is truly valuable

What is valuable for you in your life? Well, maybe certain things are valuable for certain reasons. For a busy world, perhaps it is rest. For a work-centric world, perhaps it is family-time. For an expensive world, perhaps it is money. For most of us, it is probably a mixture of a whole lot of things.

It is important to think about what you value in life, because what you value helps determine your decisions. If family-time is the most valuable thing to you, that’ll show in how you live your life. If money is the most valuable thing to you, that’ll also show in how you live your life. For example, when two of your values come in conflict with each other, you will choose the value that is most valuable to you.

So, if you were to list your top five things of value, what would make that list? After you have thought about that consider this: would anything of heavenly value ever make your list? The truth is that it is hard to remember the great value of heavenly gifts because these are gifts that are often unseen. We naturally tend to value what we can see.

Yet, these heavenly gifts are of greater value than anything earthly. Forgiveness is far more important than a relaxing game of golf (and I love golf). Hearing the Word of God is far more valuable than the time and a half hours that you get for working overtime. Heaven is of greater value than any mansion you could build here on earth.

When you find yourself valuing things of this world over the blessings of the next, what’s the solution? Well, it is not to work harder to value what is heavenly. The solution is to immerse yourself in the sources of God’s power – his Word and his sacraments. Come and be fed spiritually in a worship service. Because these gifts from God will grow your faith and will help you to hold onto what is truly valuable.
