Parkston Devil Rays 5, Dell Rapids PBR 3 - A pair of doubles in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference for the Parkston Devil Rays in a 5-3 win over Dell Rapids PBR in the second round of the Class B tournament.
Trailing 1-0, Dave Soulek doubled to score one for a 1-1 tie. Two batters later, Ty Neugebauer doubled to score two more giving Parkston a 3-1 lead they’d never relinquish.
Dells scored once in the top of eighth and one more in the top of the ninth to cut it to 5-3 but could get no closer.
Neugebauer was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI in the win while Soulek was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Carter Sommer pitched eight strong innings for the Rays, striking out five and allowing six hits with no earned runs.
PBR led 1-0 going into the sixth before Parkston took the 3-1 lead. Dells’ one run in the bottom of the fifth came on one of two Parkston errors. Dells had chances late and left the bases loaded in the eighth.
Three Dell Rapids players finished with two hits each. Chris Burke, Riley Hoffman and Drew Sweeter were all 2-for-5 from the plate.
Next up for Parkston is a quarterfinal game against the Kimball/White Lake Nationals at 7:30 on Thursday, Aug. 14.
Kimball/White Lake Nationals 10, Milbank Firechiefs 0 - A two-run bottom of the fourth ended up being the difference for Kimball/White Lake, but a monster eight-run eighth inning put things away for the Nationals in a 10-0 win over the Milbank Firechiefs in the second round of the Class B tournament.
The Nationals opened the scoring in the fourth on a wild pitch, and added one more when Carter Lenz singled to score Dylan Konechne for a 2-0 lead.
Things stayed close from there until KWL exploded for eight runs in the eighth fueled by a Caden Lenz single that scored two. Then Carter Lenz doubled to score two more and the lead ballooned to 10-0.
While the KWL bats were on fire with 12 hits, the pitching core from the Nationals held Milbank in check at the plate. Ethan Price went 7.2 innings for KWL, giving up just one hit while striking out 12 without a walk in 132 pitches.
Milbank’s one hit came in the top of the third, a single by Isaac Schulte. Taylor Boerger picked up the loss on the mound for Milbank. He went 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs.
Next up for KWL is a quarterfinal game against the Parkston Devil Rays at 7:30 on Thursday, Aug. 14.
