Beyond superheroes: The unmatched greatness of Jesus Christ
Imagine a movie like “The Avengers,” where Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor come together to save the world. Now, picture a hero who not only saves the day but exemplifies the wisdom of Iron Man, the courage of Captain America, and the power of Thor all in one.
The New Testament letter to the Hebrews introduces us to the supremacy of Jesus Christ, whose greatness extends well beyond that of any fictional superhero. Hebrews chapter 1 reveals Jesus as the supreme figure who not only reflects God’s glory and nature but also holds the entire universe together with His power. This emphasizes that Jesus is central to our faith, showcasing His divine authority and the profound impact He has on all creation.
The beginning of this letter highlights how Jesus reveals God’s glory, embodies His very nature, and sustains the universe by His powerful word. The author contrasts Jesus with the prophets and angels, showing that He is the ultimate revelation of God, superior to all. Hebrews is a letter written to Christians suffering under persecution for their faith, illustrating salvation through Christ using Old Testament themes of sacrifice and priesthood. The letter to the Hebrews is profound in its teaching of the supremacy of Christ. From the start, you read that Jesus reveals God’s glory, embodies the very nature of God, and holds all of creation together – from the furthest reaches of the universe to the next breath you take and the next beat of your heart.
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.” Hebrews 1:3
Even the tiniest molecules holding everything around you together, all that you can see and touch and all that you can’t, including what holds your physical body together – all of creation is prevented from falling apart into utter chaos by Him.
Colossians 1:17 says, “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Jesus fulfills God’s purpose of saving us from sin, and having completed that, He sits at the highest place of honor because as Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippian church,
“Being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:8-11
