The Absent Uncle: The gift of sight
Over the past couple of weeks, I have had an appointment with my ophthalmologist to revisit my eyesight and the various maladies that are part of my vision concerns.
On the whole – while I have inherited a pair of eyes that have a number of factors that need to be paid attention to as I have grown older – I am so fortunate and grateful that I have both a great doctor that uses the latest technology to my benefit and that everything is stable, correctable, and under control.
I had noticed lately that I was having a bit of a problem seeing things. Sometimes while driving, while reading, or just looking at the clock on the wall to check the time. Just a little blurry.
As with most of us, we inherit some of what our parents pass on. As a diabetic, with controllable blood pressure issues – so I have a concern that is built in – my mom also developed cataracts, a tendency to possibly have glaucoma become a problem, and just overall be near-sighted with a bit of stigmatism thrown in for good measure.
Got’em all. I have been wearing glasses since before the sixth grade and thankfully those old coke bottle lenses from years’ past have been eliminated so that now I can have the lightest, thinnest glasses sitting above my nose that allow me to read close up, in the distance, give me auto tinting in the sun, and with just the slightest movement of my head (that frankly I don’t even notice) keeps everything in focus.
Over the past 2-3 years I really have not seen any deterioration in my ability to see. I counted myself lucky that my glasses were both effective for seeing and physically durable enough not to have to be replaced. But this year – it caught up with me. I let the good doctor know what I was seeing and he showed me what I could/should be seeing!
The new glasses showed up late last week. The world is back in focus; I can see the second hand turning on the clock on the wall. What a wonderful gift sight is; certainly not to be taken for granted.
Folks, this is a pitch for the Brandon Valley optical community – get your eyes checked – make sure you have your various conditions under control so that you can continue to see all that is out there. Sight is truly a gift – don’t take it for granted.
