From the Pulpit: The strength of God

I’m not sure why but I’ve always appreciated the military. I remember when I was young, and my older cousin was graduating from boot camp at Fort Lewis in the early 1960’s. We attended his graduation and I had never seen anything like it. All those guys marching in drill, boy did they look sharp!

Maybe I like the military because I grew up surrounded by military bases – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and even Coast Guard – they were all around us where we lived and because of that we often ran into military people, in my school, church, the stores – wherever we went, they were just there! It always made me feel secure.

I also still love watching TV shows and movies about military people and adventures – Combat, Rat Patrol, Patton, Band of Brothers. This last Christmas, I even got a new one from my daughter – 12 Strong, about the first U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 9/11.

Memorial Day is almost here. A day we pause and consider those who have given everything for our nation. Let us give pause from our always busy schedules to be thankful for the sacrifice and dedication of those faithful heroes who served our country.

In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul was in prison and under guard. He wanted to help people understand the importance of standing firm in God and his truth. He looks up and sees his Roman guard and makes an analogy about the battle we are all in and how we can defend ourselves.

Let us remember those who have stood strong for us in defending our homes and lives. Let us know where true power and truth comes from and count our blessings each day. I encourage you to read the full context of Ephesians 6. Use Paul’s analogy to be strong and faithful and alert to the challenges around us!

Ephesians 6:10-12(NLT) …Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
