From the Pulpit: Don't be afraid to trust God with the little things

Prayer is a valuable part of our relationship with God. Through prayer we grow in our faith and our trust in God. It is our ability to talk with our Heavenly Father about anything going on in our lives. About our struggles and problems, our hopes and dreams, about anything. But how many times do we go to God with the big things that are going on in our lives, but try to handle the little things on our own? Have you ever thought “Well, that’s too small, too trivial for me to bring to God. He’s got more important things to worry about than this”? I think if we are honest we all have times when we don’t bring the little, every day things to God and we try to solve them ourselves.

I love Philippians 4:6, which says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” This verse doesn’t say “in just the big things” or “in just the toughest moments.” No, it says “in every situation.” God cares about everything that is going on in our lives. He cares about the sickness, the financial struggles, the family issues, but He also cares about the little everyday things. God doesn’t want us to be anxious about anything, but in everything come to Him and trust Him, even the things that seem small. We should, and we can, bring those everyday things to God. There is nothing too small or too big for Him.

Sometimes, it’s easy for us to try to handle the small things on our own and put God on reserve for the big moments, but think about how much worry could be replaced with trust, peace and thanksgiving if we brought everything before God. What does it look like? As we are going through our day, we are talking to God about the things that come up that worry us, we are talking to God about the things we are facing, and we are trusting that He is with us every step of the way. God wants what’s best for us. Now, that doesn’t mean we just give him a list of wants and demands for Him to answer. Instead, we are praying for His help. We are praying for His will to be done. When we give Him the small things, we are showing our trust in Him. So, we trust Him in the big and in the little things. Even if His answer isn’t what we wanted or expected, no time spent with our Heavenly Father or trust we put in Him is ever wasted. When we go to Him in every situation, we can begin to recognize how He is answering our prayers and see how He is working in our lives each day. So, don’t be afraid to trust Him with the little things.
