From the Pulpit: Differences can be great!

Ever notice in many marriages how each spouse can be very different from the other? I think God has a great sense of humor. It’s my belief that two strong people can make a strong marriage. I also believe God creates us all uniquely gifted with abilities that He uses for His glory.

For example, my wife Beth has distinct gifts and abilities that I don’t. Likewise, with me, I have gifts and abilities she doesn’t have. I believe God puts people together to help each other. I value my wife’s perspectives strongly. I don’t always agree but am extremely reluctant to go opposite her thoughts.

Beth has much better taste when it comes to aesthetics. I’ve lived life without her, and I don’t like my world without her touch. In the kitchen – she cares for that realm. I just like the eating part. For me, I enjoy fixing things around the house and outside work – especially digging dirt, I’m all over that.

The differences between Beth and I are numerous, yet it’s so interesting how God takes our differences to complement the other.

For myself, one example is that I like being on time, or better yet early. Take travel, if they say plan for two hours at the airport, I want to go three hours early. Beth often pushed back when leaving on trips. Eventually it was just easier for her to go along with it, but she always reminded me how very early we were.

On one occasion, a friend dropped us off at the airport and left (we lived an hour away from the airport). Beth realized she had forgotten her ID! I called our friend who drove us there (a very patient and forgiving friend!) and asked if she would pick up Beth’s ID at our house and bring it to us. It would take two more hours of driving. We made the flight with five minutes to spare! Beth never complained after that. I love to remind Beth of this story when I want to leave early for a trip.

You can be sure there are stories Beth could tell on me! Being patient and giving in a marriage goes both ways!

And I can tell you that God did a wonderful thing in my life by giving me my wife!

Proverbs 18:22: He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
