Legion team goes 3-3 at CWS tournament

Brandon Valley improved their season record to 18-8 after going 3-3 at the multi-day CWS Tournament in Omaha. 

 

Following Tuesday’s home double header against Pierre Post 8, BV heads to face Harrisburg Post 45 tonight at 5 and 7 p.m. The team then takes four days off before hosting the Brookings Bandits on Monday, July 5 and Watertown Post 17 on July 6 at First National Bank Field. Both are double headers, slated for 5 and 7 p.m.

 

BV 12, Russellville 16

There was plenty of action at the plate, as BV and Russellville combined to score 28 runs, with the 16-12 victory going to Russellville.

 

BV scored two runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, and turned in a big six-run inning in the fifth. The bottom-of-the-first-inning runs were supplied by a Joe Kolbeck homer, which sailed over the leftfield fence. 

 

Russellville’s seven-run second inning was fueled by two walks, four doubles, a single and a balk.

 

Post 131 tacked on two runs in the fourth. The scores came courtesy of singles by Jaxon Haase, Matt Brown and Nick Hokenstad to make it 11-4 heading into the top of the fifth. The Lynx bats were smoking hot in the bottom of the sixth. A Lake Terveer triple started off the six-run inning., and was followed by singles by Michael Chevalier, Kolbeck, Haase, Hokenstad and Tyler Schelske. Trailing 12-8, the Russellville pitcher was called for a balk, which sent Matt Brown across the plate. Schelske stole home to make it a 12-10 game before Russellville’s pitching sat down the next two BV batters.

 

Russellville put up three more runs in the top of the sixth and the Lynx answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Singles by Spicer and Hokenstad, walks by Kolbeck and Brown, and an Russellville error that put Schelske on base resulted in the 15-21 score. Russellville added a run in the top of the seventh to close out the 16-12 victory.

BV charted 13 hits and Russellville had a dozen in the high-scoring affair.

 

Ray pitched Russellville to victory. The pitcher went 5 1/3 innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and striking out three. Jones threw 1 2/3 innings in relief.

 

Noah Bertsch took the loss. The bulldog surrendered seven runs on three hits over 1 1/3innings, striking out one. Jack Krohnke, Ayden Spicer and Terveer also saw time on the hill.

BV 8, Rapid City 2

The Lynx rebounded in their 8-2 victory over Rapid City Post 22, thanks in part to Brown, who drove in four runs, which came off a single in the fifth inning and a double in the sixth.

 

In the fourth, Hokenstad delivered a double, Dawson Skorczewski was walked, and Terveer nailed a home run hit to righ tfield.

 

Post 22 answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, generating back-to-back doubles, a single and a batter hit by pitch for the 4-2 game.

 

BV tacked on two runs in the both the top of the fifth and sixth innings. The first came compliments of a walk, a double by Haase and a single by Brown, which plated Kolbeck and Haase. The Lynx closed out the 8-2 victory with a single by Chevalier, walks by Kolbeck and Haase, and a double by Brown, scoring Chevalier and Kolbeck.

 

Caleb Zerr earned the win. The bulldog lasted 4 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out one. Chevalier threw 2 innings in relief, recording the last six outs to earn the save.

 

Jake Goble was charged with the loss. The pitcher allowed eight hits and six runs over 5 innings, striking out six.

 

BV scattered 10 hits in the victory. Terveer, Hokenstad, Brown and Haase all had two hits. Goble led Rapid City Post 22 with two hits in his three at bats.

BV 5, Millard West 6

This game went unfinished, but after 3.5 innings, BV trailed Millard West by a single run.

In the condensed game, Kolbeck was off to a hot start in his 1-for-1 performance, which was a two-RBI home run. 

Kelling went all three innings on the hill for BV. He gave up six runs on six hits, struck out two and walked two.

Ben David manned the hill for Millard. In his four innings, David gave up three hits, five runs, including Kolbeck’s Homer. He struck out one BV batter and walked four.

BV 9, West Fargo 6

BV took the lead late in this one, plating four runs in the bottom of the sixth, to overcome West Fargo 9-6. 

 

Knotted at 6-all, Kolbeck smacked a single to score a run. Terveer flew across home plate on a wild pitch and Schelske scored on a sacrifice fly by Haase en route to the 9-6 finish.

 

The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game. Post 131 collected nine hits and West Fargo had nine.

 

Brandon Valley Post 131 opened up scoring in the first inning, when  Haase singled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs. RBI singles by Skorczewski and Logan Kelling closed out the scoring before West Fargo implemented a double play to end the four-run inning.

 

Trey Sejnoha got the start on the hill for BV. The fireballer went 5 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out two West Fargo batters.

 

Brayden J. led things off on the pitcher’s mound for West Fargo. The bulldog surrendered eight runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out two. Lance O. threw 2/3 of an inning out of the bullpen.

BV 7, Creighton Prep 11

Creighton Prep Five Points Bank scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third, essentially sealing the 11-7 victory over the BV Post 131.

 

The Lynx opened with two runs in the first, getting singles from Terveer, Chevalier and doubles by both Haase and Brown.

 

CP registered their first four runs on a single by Kalen Piechota and an in-the-park home run by Ryan Bauer to take a 4-2 lead.

 

Creighton rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a couple of batters hit by pitch, singles from Brok Laney and a double by Bauer. After three innings, CP led 9-2.

 

BV registered two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. The first came compliments of a single by Kolbeck, a trio of walks to lessen the gap, 9-4.

 

The Lynx bats heated up in the sixth, getting singles from Kolbeck, Spicer, Hokenstad and Skorczewski aand a double by Haase. Heading into the bottom of the frame, BV trailed 11-7.

 

Robert O. pitched Creighton the win. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and struck out seven BV batters. Laney threw 2 1/3 innings in relief.

 

Brown took the loss, surrendering nine runs on four hits over 2 1/3 inning. He struck out one.

 

Despite the deficit in the game score, BV smacked a dozen hits. Spicer, Chevalier, Haase and Kolbeck all had two hits to their credit.

 

Bauer went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Creighton.

BV closed out the CWS Tourney Sunday on a winning note, defeating Millard South 52’s 8-6, thanks to a six-run first inning. 

 

Bats blistered in this one, as BV charted 12 hits and Millard South 52’s tallied 14 in the high-scoring affair.

 

Post 131 got the scoring party started on a triple by Terveer, singles by Kolbeck, Brown, Skorczewski and Reiter. The Lynx also used three walks en route to the six-run tally.

 

Millard South put up one run in the bottom of the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and threatened with two runs in the seventh.

 

Bertsch was credited with the win. The fireballer surrendered six runs on 13 hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out two Millard batters.

 

Krohnke threw 2/3 of an inning in relief, recording the final two outs to earn the save.

 

Easton T. was charged with the loss. In his 4 1/3 innings on the hill, he allowed five hits and two runs. He sat down five BV batters. Logan A. started the game for Millard. He lasted just 2/3 of an inning, allowing five hits and six runs.

 

Terveer, Kolbeck, Hokenstad and Brown all had two hits, while Millard was led by Matt, who went 4-for-4 at the plate.
