The ‘ughhs’ of winter

By:
Jill Meier, Journal Editor

I do some of my best thinking while standing in front of the mirror mindlessly blow-drying my hair each morning. I often use that time – when I’m at a loss for a column topic – to think of a topic to put pencil to paper to.

This morning was one of those mornings.

This morning was also one of those mornings where topics for this column eluded me.

Nothing came to mind.

Not a single topic.

Zilch.

Notta.

Blank.

Ugh.

And that’s what leads me to write this column about nothing.

Here’s a thought for you to ponder: Is nothing really something? Or is nothing, for lack of a better word, nothing?

That thought ate up a few lines that I need to fill this space.

Most weeks, crafting my column is one of my favorite pieces to write.

But on days like this, when the idea bank is empty – completely empty – it’s not one my favorite pieces to click out on the ol’ keyboard.

With the local news playing on the TV in the background this morning, I thought perhaps something I heard could be a possible topic. But all I heard is, “Hold on to your hats, South Dakotans – the wind is coming and so are colder temperatures.”

Ugh.

But fear not, you’re going to get a near 50-degree day today. Then, my dear readers, we’re going to get thrown to the wolves weather-wise.

I, like many of you, am so over this winter.

We’ve shoveled snow way too many times. We’ve spun our tires at one icy intersection after another. I biffed it on the slippery landscape three times in less than a week, and the last one, well, that one still smarts – a lot. I fear what the doctor may tell me: you’re going to need surgery.

Ugh.

Although the sun may be shining today and temperatures are forecast to rise tomorrow, the Hercules-sized snowbanks won’t be disappearing fast enough for this ol’ gal.

As I wrap up this column about nothing, I realized that I did have one thought before the mirror this morning. Although disappointed that our Lynx boys’ basketball team won’t be heading to the state tournament in Rapid City later this week, with the less-than-desirable weather forecasted for the weekend, I’m surely not disappointed to forgo battling slippery roads and high winds all the way across the state.

But I am going to miss out on pulling off I-90 into Wall for one – or a box of six (to share, of course) – of those oh so tasty donuts.
